Some seeming contradictions are a matter of balance, two sides of the same coin. This pair of scriptures is an example. The first makes a statement of the basis of salvation, that one cannot earn the reinstatement of right relationship with God (which is what salvation consists of). The second is its balance ...so let's take a closer look at what the bible is really saying. Balancing the scale.
